RAF Brize Norton
RAF Brize Norton is situated between Brize Norton village and Carterton town, south of the A40, about 22 miles West of Oxford. It is the largest RAF station and the home to the tanker and jet transport fleet. It is the largest Station in the Royal Air Force and is the main airport used for deploying UK troops worldwide.
Mission: To project Air Transport and Air-to-Air Refuelling and support deployed operations and exercises.
The station is organised into 4 wings ; Base Support Wing, Airport of Embarkation, Forward Support and Operations. The service and civilian personnel who work in these 4 wings carry out all the jobs that support the Station, its people, its flying squadrons and other units, and the units who lodge at RAF Brize Norton.
Flying Squadrons at RAF Brize Norton are: 99 Squadron, flying the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, 101 Squadron, flying the Vickers VC10, 216 Squadron, flying the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar. The Station is also home to 501 Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force which recruits male and female volunteers from within a 100-mile radius.
RAF Brize Norton is situated in Carterton, West Oxfordshire which is a town with 19,000 residents. It lies in the Thames Valley and is surrounded by scenic countryside including the Cotswold area of outstanding natural beauty. Carterton is a thriving and rapidly expanding town with new housing, industrial and business areas being developed. New leisure and shopping facilities are being added to the many already established amenities.
RAF Brize Norton has facilities and equipment for all RAF recognised sports. The Physical Education Flight staffs are always willing to offer guidance on all aspects of sport and recreation. Within the Learning Centre is the Station library which has a computer based interactive learning centre that is open to service personnel, dependants and MOD civilians. The Station swimming pool is open to all personnel and dependants and includes a 25–metre pool, sauna and tanning cubicle. The Astra Bowl is a 12-lane ten-pin bowling centre; open to all personnel and the public, it offers reduced priced ten-pin bowling.
